Welcome to the KITHFOLK / Hearth Music Substack!
Kicking off a new year with a newsletter on traditional music around the globe.
WHO AM I?
Hey I’m Devon Léger, former music publicist for HearthPR and longtime music writer. I’ve been writing about traditional music since 2008 and I’m one of the last bloggers standing of the 2010s, if that means anything. I’ve interviewed hundreds of artists, and been at the forefront of major changes in roots, trad, Americana, country, and global music genres. It’s been a fun ride, but now I’m really looking forward to diving into traditional music primarily, looking at how old traditions still hold meaning in a thoroughly modern world.
KITHFOLK is the roots music publication I started some years ago. I’d like to bring it back and share some of the great article we did back in the day, plus write some new ones. Hearth Music is the larger catch-all for my work in the music biz.
What’s the plan?
I’ll be sharing favorite albums, rising artists, and new discoveries in traditional music. I’ll talk about all kinds of different traditions, everything from Indigenous roots to Appalachian stringbands and Irish session masters. I’ll share interviews from my archives of music writing, as well as articles and reviews as they get published, plus I’ll add in tips for artists and maybe some of my own Acadian and French-Canadian fiddling!
Who is this for?
Over the years as a music publicist, I stuck to one simple credo: “I want to share music I love with people I trust”. If you’re on this list, you’re a person I trust and I’m excited to get excited about music with you! If you have tips for me or questions or know an artist you think I’d like, hit me up!
When to expect newsletters?
I’m just getting started and I’ve got some other major news too coming in a couple months, but let’s start off doing this every other week!
Tune in to my playlists!
If you want to know what I’m listening to, give a like to the Hearth Music Office Playlist! I update it every other week with my favorite tracks I can’t stop listening to!
Devon - this looks great!
